Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Almost every Aussie will have heard of eucalyptus, guaranteed! Eucalyptus trees are homes to many of our Australian bush babies, koalas being the most well-known. The leaves of this native Australian species have a strong, tangy, woody-sweet scent that is easily recognisable and commonly used in insect repellents, cosmetics, candles and other decorative pieces. Eucalyptus Essential Oil is known for its plethora of benefits within the household and for our minds, bodies and souls. Let's delve deeper into why this Aussie gem is such a popular Essential Oil, not just in Australia but across the globe...
History of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Australia's native people, Aborigines, used Eucalyptus Oil in many of their holistic remedies. It was utilised as a cure-all medicine and was soon harvested and cultivated by many tribes. Other uses for the Eucalyptus trees were arts and crafts, paper-making, fire-starting and also malaria fighting (mosquitos and other insects are not the biggest fans of the scent of Eucalyptus). The trees were also planted to dry out marshlands and swamps, due to the purifying qualities of the thick root systems these trees grow.
In the 1950s, Algerian swamps filled with malaria spreading mosquitoes were transformed into dry, healthy soil with the help of some eucalyptus seeds being sent across the globe by the French government.
The oil itself became hugely popular in modern alternative medicine throughout World War I. It helped stifle a meningitis outbreak during the influenza pandemic of 1919. It was also used as an aid for ulcers, burns, wounds and respiratory conditions.
