How To Tell If Your Essential Oil Is Fake – Natural Aromas

How To Tell If Your Essential Oil Is Fake

The wide world of Essential Oils is filled with amazing aromatherapists doing wonderful things to help people manage crippling conditions like headaches, allergies, anxiety, depression and more. As always, with the good eggs come the bad. Unfortunately, there are "Essential Oil" creators and distributors out there who don't in fact create and sell pure and true Essential Oils, instead they create fake knock-off versions that don't actually work. Here's how to tell if your Essential Oil is fake or real...

Recognise the smell

When it comes to telling the difference between real and fake Essential Oils, some of the more vibrant scents can easily be distinguished. Even without an aromatherapy qualification, most of us know what the smell of Lavender or Eucalyptus oil is like, especially if we've used Essential Oils before.

If the oil doesn't have a pungent, strong, pure scent to it, it's most likely been heavily watered down or is completely fake.

Check the bottle

Tip number one here is that your high quality Essential Oils are likely going to be stored in a dark, glass bottle. Avoid plastic bottles, bottles that aren't properly sealed and large bottles (most quality oils are sold in smaller quantities).

Read the label

One of the easiest ways to spot an Essential Oil imposter is to read the label. Look for terms like "fragrance oil" and check to see if the Latin name of the plant is listed. If your bottle says "fragrance oil" and no Latin name is printed, I'm sorry to say that your oil is likely fake. Most pure Essential Oils and Blends will also state "100% Pure Essential Oil" or "Pure Essential Oil Blend" on the label alongside any ingredients.

Check the price

You're not going to get a high quality Essential Oil at a super cheap price. It's just not possible when you consider the amount of time and effort that goes into making each batch. You should also steer clear of overpriced Essential Oils too. Because each oil takes its own unique process to create, it's hard to give a general price range but usually somewhere in the range of $30-$50 per 15ml Pure Essential Oil (give or take) is a common price for most high quality oils.

Know the source

The best way to avoid dodgy Essential Oils is to always buy from a reputable source. Find yourself an aromatherapist who knows what they're doing and isn't afraid to answer your questions.
