What is the history of Lavender?

Lavender, scientifically named Lavandula, is first and foremost a herb. It has been a staple in homes for centuries whether that be for its culinary uses, its decorative effects, the healing properties of its oil or simply within a mix of dried flowers (pot pourri) to keep clothes and rooms smelling amazing.

FUN FACT: Some sources state that back in the 1600s Queen Elizabeth acquired a taste for lavender jam so it was produced en masse as a popular preserve in order to feed the masses who wanted to emulate her.

Other culinary uses of lavender throughout the ages include drying the flowers and using them as decorations on cakes, infusing the petals into both sweet and savoury dishes, making it into a delicious herbal tea, and distilling it in various alcoholic drinks, predominantly gin.

Hand creams, bath bombs and other cosmetic items include lavender as an ingredient, particularly ones that are used at night time to promote relaxation and sleep.

Candles and essential oils are made and blended using the natural aromas of lavender to promote a calming environment. You can usually find these in day spas or places you visit to feel relaxed.

The uses are endless! It's easy to see why this one of our best selling oils in the store.
